How to write an engaging “hook” and summary on your LinkedIn profile.

In general, you should include concise sentences in your summary that explain many useful ideas in just a few words. Does that sound difficult? It can be, but there are some exercises that will help you master this skill.

What’s a summary?

On LinkedIn, your summary is a text box that includes an overview of your professional experience. People visiting your profile will see this right away, since it is included directly under your photo. It can be challenging to write, because you need to write about yourself in just a few short words, quickly defining who you are, while highlighting your biggest achievements. In other words, it’s like making a first impression on paper.

What’s a hook?

A “hook” is a captivating way to draw in your readers and make them want to read more about you. Typically, this is the first sentence of your summary. Here are some tips on writing engaging hooks and summaries:

1. Think about your first sentence.

You definitely don’t want to start out your summary with a simple, lackluster sentence.

Bad Example: Hi there! It’s great to have you on my page. I’m Lucy Fairfield, and I’ve been working in the finance sector since December of 1999.

Why is this a bad example? First off, you don’t need to include things like “Hi there!” or “It’s great to have you on my page!”. This is considered “jargon” and doesn’t help the person visiting your profile to get a good idea of who you are or the services you offer. This takes up precious space in your summary, so it’s best to avoid it. Also, you don’t necessarily need to include start dates in this section; that information should be located in the resume section on your page.

Good Example: I’m a finance professional that is passionate about helping companies make the most of their budgets while staying on track for financial success.

Why is this a good example? It is clear, concise, and to the point. From this sentence alone, we know that this person is a finance professional that works with companies (and not necessarily individuals) and specializes in budget management.

2. Use Keywords

The good example we’ve just looked at uses helpful keywords that you should implement in your first sentence and general summary. Let’s look at those:

Good Example: I’m a finance professional who is passionate about helping companies make the most of their budgets while staying on track for financial success.

Can you find the keywords? They are included below in bold:

Good Example: I’m a finance professional who is passionate about helping companies make the most of their budgets while staying on track for financial success.

The positive terms (passionate / staying on track / make the most of / financial success) show that the person is driven and results-oriented. We know that the person is in the finance sector and works directly with companies, too.

3. Be Clear with a Call to Action

What do you want the person reading your summary to do? Be clear about it. Are you looking for people to reach out to you about a potential partnership? Here’s how that would look:

I’m a finance professional who is passionate about helping companies make the most of their budgets while staying on track for financial success. Feel free to contact me if you would like to hear how I can help your company excel financially!

This is clear: the person has included a “Call to Action”: a phrase that urges your audience to do something. In this case, she clearly states she is open to discussing financial matters.

Of course, you can include more in your own summary (in between your first sentence and Call to Action). However, the hardest parts of writing a summary are usually the first and last sentences.

Try this exercise: Write an engaging first sentence and call to action sentence in 50 words or less. Make sure to follow the three tips included in the previous section.
